Madolyn's First Visit to the Dentist July 7, 2011

After much preparation through library books about the dentist and daily brushing and flossing of teeth, Madolyn had her first cleaning and exam appointment at the dentist. I took her to a dentist I use to work for, Dr. Mark McKell, in Provo.

We started checking out books about the dentist and after reading them a few times Madolyn thought she was a dentist herself and a couple times a day would have Avery or me lay down so she could "check" our teeth. Avery was a very good sport and always let her. She would use her plastic toy utensils and have us open and then tell us our teeth were good. She would also want to lay down and have me check her teeth everyday.

The day of her appointment I think I was more nervous for her than she was for herself. Not that i'm afraid of the dentist by any means but I wasn't sure how she would react. When I was working some kids had no fear and would hop up in the chair and others would scream and flail before they even walked in the operatory. I thought she would do well because she has always let me brush and floss her teeth without a fuss and because she was so excited to go the dentist; everyday for the couple of weeks leading up to her appointment she would ask if we were going to the dentist. I figured that if she didn't want them to work on her I would just hop in the chair and clean them myself. Well she did great! We walked in and they took me back first to have my teeth cleaned and Madolyn headed over the the coloring desk and books. She is always shy when we walk into a new environment so she was a little slow walking to the room with the assistant but once she climbed in the chair she opened and let them polish and clean, put fluoride on and even let Dr. McKell check her teeth without any complaints or resistance, and without me in the room. That's my girl. Even though she got to pick out a toy her favorite part was getting a new tooth brush.
